Stephen Carlisle is a Denver-based painter whose art explores the vibrant intersections of community, identity, and natural beauty.
After a distinguished 40-year career as a federal public servant, including serving as the editor of a major diversity and engagement magazine for 70,000 employees at the U.S. Department of the Interior, he now dedicates his days fully to the canvas. This lifetime of amplifying diverse human stories directly shapes his creative vision.
As a proud gay artist, his work is deeply rooted in the LGBTQ+ experience, celebrating resilience, authenticity, and the power of living openly.
Now deeply inspired by the majestic Colorado Rockies and the thriving creative energy of Denver, he translates the brilliant colors and sweeping landscapes around him into bold, emotionally resonant paintings, and seeks to capture the unique personality of queer Denver in his insightful portraits. His work serves as a colorful bridge between a lifetime of public service and a joyful new chapter of artistic freedom.
